Sisal nursery operations
When selecting
a site for a sisal nursery, the following criteria shall be met:
•Close proximity of the next season’s
planting area
•Close to a water source to facilitate
irrigation where necessary
•Area with fertile soil
Site preparation
The
nursery site needs proper preparation, the following steps below:
Brushcutting, after
which the broken boles and other brushcut
materials are burnt. Remnant debris is collected and burnt.
Single
ripping. In case of much debris this is again collected and burnt.
Heavy
harrowing
Light
harrowing
Collection of bulbils and suckers
Nursery
material is preferably collected as bulbils from older sisal poles in the
field. In case of insufficient bulbils the company will use suckers to plant in
the main field from the existing sisal fields instead.
